![]() ![]() The various chapels of Saint John's Co-Cathedral represent the different langues (regions) of the Knights of Malta, who hailed from many different countries in Europe.Īmong the eight chapels are a few must-see highlights: The Chapel of the Langue of Aragon (the region of Catalonia and Navarre in Spain) features Mattia Preti's painting of Saint George on a white stallion after slaying a dragon. The most renowned artwork in the church is The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist by Caravaggio in the Oratory. The nave exemplifies extravagant Baroque decor with ostentatiously gilded walls and ceiling paintings by Mattia Preti, the famous Maltese painter. You are sure to be impressed by the array of historic monuments and program of cultural offerings. Today, Valletta is a real working city and a delightful tourist destination. Valletta is called "a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen." The grand Baroque architecture reflects the Knights' stature as aristocrats from noble families in England, France, Spain, and other European countries. Once Valletta became the new military fortress of the Order of Saint John, the Knights set out to create a capital city equal to Europe's finest. In 1530, the Spanish King, Charles V, gave Malta to the Knights. The city's history is tied to the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, an 11th-century order that provided shelter for pilgrims in the Holy Land and took on a military role to defend Christianity. The UNESCO-listed capital of Malta stands proudly on one of Europe's grandest harbors, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and surrounded by some of the mightiest fortifications in the world. Valletta is a distinguished city with a legendary past. ![]() ![]() ![]() As a result, we can be a little more certain on some of the many compounds that contribute to the smell. There’s a reason for this, as it’s been investigated as a potential method for assessing the condition of old books, by monitoring the concentrations of different organic compounds that they give off. ![]() A number of different adhesives are used for book-binding, many of which are based on organic ‘co-polymers’ – large numbers of smaller molecules chemically chained together.Īs stated, differences in paper, adhesives, and inks used will influence the ‘new book smell’, so not all new books will smell the same – perhaps the reason why no research has yet attempted to definitively define the aroma.Īn aroma that has had much more research carried out around it, however, is that of old books. The same is true of chemicals used in the inks, and the adhesives used in the books. The upshot of this is that some of these chemicals can contribute, through their reactions or otherwise, to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, the odours of which we can detect. Many other chemicals are also used – this is just a very rough overview. This water will contain additives to modify the properties of the the paper – for example, AKD (alkyl ketene dimer) is commonly used as a ‘sizing agent’ to improve the water-resistance of the paper. The fibres are then bleached with a number of other chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide then, they are mixed with large amounts of water. Large amounts of paper are made from wood pulp (though it can also be made from cotton and textiles) – chemicals such as sodium hydroxide, often referred to in this context as ‘caustic soda’, can be added to increase pH and cause fibres in the pulp to swell. The manufacture of paper requires the use of chemicals at several stages. It’s likely that the bulk of ‘new book smell’ can be put down to three main sources: the paper itself (and the chemicals used in its manufacture), the inks used to print the book, and the adhesives used in the book-binding process. Add to this the fact that there are literally hundreds of compounds involved, and it becomes clearer why it evades attribution to a small selection of chemicals. Secondly, the variation in the chemicals used to manufacture books also means that it’s an aroma that will vary from book to book. Firstly, there seems to be a scarcity of scientific research that’s been carried out on the subject – to be fair, it’s understandable why it might not exactly be high up on the priority list. Similarly, who doesn’t enjoy riffling through the pages of a newly purchased book and breathing in the crisp aroma of new paper and freshly printed ink? As with all aromas, the origins can be traced back to a number of chemical constituents, so we can examine the processes and compounds that can contribute to both.Īs far as the smell of new books goes, it’s actually quite difficult to pinpoint specific compounds, for a number of reasons. Everyone’s familiar with the smell of old books, the weirdly intoxicating scent that haunts libraries and second-hand book stores. ![]() ![]() Note: attach, attach-session, and a are all aliases for each other. Learning in Public WaylonWalker edit tmux new window Watch on New window as it sounds makes new windows in tmux. I'd also like 'scratch' to be created if it doesn't exist. Then you want to bind a key to split the window and also ssh into server2? Is that correct?Īssuming this is right, this is the relatively common question of getting tmux to do something based on the existing state of the current window, and the answer is you need to tell it the state before your create the window, or from inside the window.Ä«ecause you already have shortcuts to create the window you could store the server name in your C-s binding and then use it in your new C-\ binding.įor example, change your C-s binding to set a user variable on the window with the target host, something like this - note this is doing the set-option from inside the new window, but before it runs ssh: bind C-s command-prompt -pserver 'neww "tmux set -w \"%1\" ssh \"%1\""' I'd like to be able to create a new tmux window(tab) in a session called 'scratch' running a custom command (ie. So you ssh into server1 and run tmux, then ssh into server2 from inside tmux. ![]() Thank you for any any direction, comments, questions. At that point I'd probably just do another C-S(get prompted for ssh servername) and join the window(which saying that isn't a bad idea as an alternative) The nested windows would then split and show another pane on that server. The closest way we have found is nesting and using a plugin to change which server tmux would respond to the prefix. nf and scripts all follow me to every server.Ä®ach window has the server name set, though in the future we may try to get it to servername, task (example"srv001,htop") depends on how this works out :) What I would like to do is bind C-\ and C-"-" to split the current window and ssh into that same server instead of it opening a window for the main server. The way we use tmux is to ssh into a main server, we will then open tmux, and create a new window for each server we ssh into (C-S, prompts for a server and this will then create a new windows and ssh into the server). ![]() ![]() The largest documented non-stretched dry skin is deposited at Zoologische Staatssammlung München (ZSM 4961/2012) and measures 14.6 ft (4.45 m) without head.
